5.5 The Over-Treatment Problem

A large proportion of the timber treatment carried out in British houses addresses an organism that is no longer active, or applies a chemical instead of removing the water that the organism required. This is not a fringe view and it is not an accusation of bad faith — it is a structural consequence of who surveys, who specifies and who benefits, and understanding that structure is what lets a practitioner give advice that is worth paying for.

- Environmental control
- Eliminating decay by removing moisture and providing ventilation, so conditions fall below what the organism requires. Primary approach for wood-decay fungi.
- Remedial treatment
- Chemical application to timber or masonry to kill or prevent organisms. Secondary, and warranted only where a specific residual risk is identified.
- Specifier-installer conflict
- The situation where the party diagnosing the problem also sells the remedy. Shapes findings without requiring intent, per Module 4.8.
- Guarantee-driven specification
- Work specified to satisfy the terms of a long guarantee rather than to address an identified condition.
